History KOVOSVIT MAS
The origins of KOVOSVIT MAS date back to June 1939, when the construction of the Bata plant in Sezimovo Ústí began. Almost half a year later, in December 1939, production of the first machine tools began. Around this time, the logo – the MAS brand – was also created, which at that time stood for Moravian and Slovak Machine Works (a similar plant was built in Slovakia at that time). Since 1940, the company has had its own foundry, which is still actively operating today. In the following period, the production of turret and spindle lathes and radial drills was moved to Sezimovo Ústí from Zlín. Since 1945, the production of radial drills of its own development has been developed. In the period 1941 – 1942, the production of bicycles was introduced as an additional product.
In 1949, the national company Kovosvit Sezimovo Ústí was founded. At that time, 1700 employees were already working there. In the 1950s, the company was mainly engaged in the production of horizontal drills and heavy planers. The production of automatic lathes was also started. With the development of electronics in the 1960s, the independent development and production of numerically controlled machines, referred to as NC machines, began. In the 1980s, Kovosvit also celebrated international success. Many machines won Gold Medals at the international trade fairs in Brno and Leipzig. The breakthrough product at this time was the universal turning and milling centre MCSY 50 and MCSY 80.
In the following years, these numerically controlled machines were gradually improved.
The Present of KOVOSVIT MAS
KOVOSVIT MAS has considerably strengthened its position on the world engineering market in recent years and is currently the leader in the production of multifunctional machine tools in the Czech Republic. The first half of the 1990s was marked by the restructuring of the company, the search for new markets and a fundamental change in the product range. The company focused on the development and production of CNC machines whose control systems allow fully automatic operation. As the 21st century dawned, the company increasingly responded to market and customer demands by increasing productivity and reducing production costs. Multi-axis machines enabling complex machining and machines manufactured to specific customer requirements have entered production.
KOVOSVIT MAS has not escaped the global economic crisis. The turning point for growth was 2011, when KOVOSVIT MAS came out of the crisis and out of the red and into the black, and in terms of economic results, KOVOSVIT MAS confirmed a 35% year-on-year increase in turnover. Since that year, the company began to invest massively in production, innovative technologies, reconstruction of production facilities, including administrative facilities.
2017 was a year of innovation for KOVOSVIT MAS. From the Brno Engineering Fair, it brought a gold medal for the WeldPrint 5X machine, which enables 3D printing of metal and machining in one space and which is the result of the company’s cooperation with academia.
The covid-19 disease pandemic in 2020 affected the entire world and the engineering segment was one of the hardest hit areas. Coronavirus measures had a significant impact on the performance of many companies, which were forced to reassess their strategies and create rapid action plans. The unprecedented situation was not lost on the companies of the KOVOSVIT MAS Group. However, despite the significant downturn in the global economy, KOVOSVIT MAS managed to cast 5,000 tonnes of cast iron and produce 94 machines. In financial terms, KOVOSVIT MAS Foundry generated sales of CZK 270 million and KOVOSVIT MAS Machine Tools CZK 572 million. As a result, at EBITDA level, KOVOSVIT MAS Foundry made a profit of CZK 4 million and KOVOSVIT MAS Machine Tools a profit of CZK 35 million. Industry Innovation, a company owned by entrepreneur Michal Strnad, sold its majority stake to the investment fund Trust Union Fund.
