Remote diagnostics is the analysis of the status of the machine by a diagnostician using communication software. This communication software is provided by the producer of the respective control system for the machine. The screen and dialogue menu of the control system can be accessed using communication software (today, usually through the Internet). The communication software does not include any diagnostic tools. the diagnostician remotely uses the internal diagnostic options for the control system.

The screen and CNC dialogue menu is accessible from any distance. The diagnostician not only monitors the actual status of the machine through its screen, but by using his computer keyboard controls the CNC menu, transfers bi-directionally almost all data and by using the CHAT function conducts a dialogue with the operators. During the analysis of the machine defects, the diagnostician uses all CNC integrated diagnostic functions.

The main reason for using this function is to acquire data on the status of the machine immediately after the client reports a defect. This will exclude approximate written or verbal information from the client which could unintentionally mislead the service regarding the real reason for the defect. The analysis of the defect can be carried out immediately after origination by a trained diagnostician. Moreover, a diagnostician can influence CNC data and suppress a defect or fully remove the optimisation.

The main objective of diagnostics is to shorten the downtime of the machine in order that consequent service activity is exactly goal-directed. This reduces client losses which originate from the disconnection of the machine.
